VCAST technology with European patent – a breakthrough in AI-based cardiac imaging

Kardiolytics, a subsidiary of Medicalgorithmics, has been granted a European patent for its method of numerical modeling of blood flow in arteries. This solution, which has been under patent protection in the United States since April 2024, constitutes a key component of the VCAST technology developed by the company. VCAST leverages artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze cardiac computed tomography (CT) scans. Obtaining the European patent marks a significant milestone in the commercialization of the technology within the EU. The company estimates that VCAST, which received CE certification in mid-October 2024, could generate approximately PLN 130 million in revenue by 2028.

Medicalgorithmics is one of only a few companies globally to offer innovative diagnostic technology for coronary artery disease. VCAST presents a significantly more cost-effective and accessible alternative to traditional procedures, such as coronary angiography. Currently, only a handful of companies offer comparable solutions, and the level of funding secured by firms such as HeartFlow Inc. (valued at USD 1.3 billion, with USD 936 million raised across 12 funding rounds, including USD 98.4 million in March 2025) or Cleerly Inc. (USD 106 million in Series C funding in December 2024, raising total financing to USD 410.29 million) demonstrates the market’s potential.

“We see enormous opportunity for Medicalgorithmics in the segment of AI-driven diagnostic technologies for coronary artery disease, with long-term growth potential. Today, the target patient population in the markets where we plan to launch VCAST is four times larger than the number of patients with cardiac arrhythmias,” said Dr. Kris Siemionow, CEO of Medicalgorithmics.

Virtual Cardiac Stress Test (VCAST) is a technology that enables non-invasive assessment of coronary artery condition for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. The diagnostic process is based on cardiac CT data analyzed by a proprietary suite of artificial intelligence algorithms developed by Kardiolytics. VCAST supports physicians in diagnosing coronary artery disease by offering a fast and non-invasive alternative to conventional invasive diagnostic methods such as coronary angiography.

The European patent (No. EP3629341), granted in early July, pertains to a method of numerical modeling of arterial blood flow, enabling the analysis of atherosclerotic plaque surface deformation and associated mechanical stress.

“The world-class solutions we are developing are receiving increasing recognition, and the newly granted patent confirms the quality and potential of the VCAST technology. Our solution is already being deployed in pilot implementations by several leading diagnostic centers across Europe. The patents obtained in the US and Europe, the CE certification, and the current deployments bring us closer to commercializing this breakthrough technology not only in Europe but also globally. VCAST will significantly enhance the diagnostics of coronary artery disease, improving both the speed and quality of patient care,” said Przemysław Tadla, CEO of Kardiolytics and CTO of Medicalgorithmics.

The year 2025 has seen a marked increase in interest in the company’s products and an acceleration in client acquisition. Since the beginning of the year, Medicalgorithmics has signed 13 new agreements with partners in the United States, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Turkey, and other European countries—matching the total number of agreements signed in all of 2024. Simultaneously, the Polish medtech company has experienced a substantial increase in the number of ECG tests performed, reaching 92,000 in Q1 2025, representing a nearly 100% year-over-year growth.
