Medicalgorithmics, a Warsaw Stock Exchange-listed developer of innovative technologies in the field of cardiology, is taking a significant step towards expanding its therapeutic capabilities in cardiac surgery. The company has signed a letter of intent with the Prof. Zbigniew Religa Foundation for the Development of Cardiac Surgery in Zabrze and Biofund Capital Management, under which it is negotiating the terms of cooperation on the development of a proprietary surgical robot. The project aims to develop a minimally invasive robotic system to assist doctors in performing procedures to treat structural heart defects.
Once launched, the system has the potential to become a breakthrough step for Medicalgorithmics towards building a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic model — from advanced analysis and diagnosis of heart diseases and defects to technologies supporting their effective, precise treatment.
– Potential work on an innovative cardiac surgery robot would be the perfect addition to Medicalgorithmics’ project portfolio. We fully support the diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmias through ECG analysis software and devices, as well as non-invasive diagnosis of coronary artery disease using VCAST technology. Our latest project will be supported by existing diagnostic technologies, such as automatic segmentation and analysis of cardiac structures based on computed tomography (as part of the VCAST project), in the actual treatment of patients. All this is thanks to the combination of our know-how in the fields of algorithms, software and electronic circuits with the Foundation’s vast expertise in the areas of heart valves, cardio-robotics and cardiac surgery – comments Dr Kris Siemionow, CEO of Medicalgorithmics.
Following the signing of a letter of intent, Medicalgorithmics, Biofund Capital Management and the Prof. Zbigniew Religa Foundation for the Development of Cardiac Surgery in Zabrze are commencing negotiations. The aim is to establish cooperation on the development and market launch of a minimally invasive robotic platform for structural interventions in cardiology, combining advanced software for anatomical analysis and CT-based planning, surgical and mechatronic systems, and the optimisation of clinical workflows.
– A key element of the agreement under negotiation will be the Biofund, which will not only provide financial and technical support for the project but will also contribute its expertise and intellectual property in this field. The fund’s portfolio already includes companies combining cardiac surgery robotics with catheterisation technology and next-generation implants, such as Capstan Medical, Versa Medical and Kardibot – says Dr Kris Siemionow.
Biofund Capital Management has a number of projects in the fields of cardiology and cardiac surgery in its portfolio, which are attracting significant interest from investors and the medical community. Capstan Medical, a project in the field of surgical robotics, secured funding of USD 110 million in December 2024. A second cardiology project – Versa Medical – raised $27.3 million in July 2025. At the same time, the Company highlights the strategic scientific contribution of the Zbigniew Religa Foundation for the Development of Cardiac Surgery to the development of a potential joint project.
– We are very proud to have commenced discussions with the Zbigniew Religa Foundation for the Development of Cardiac Surgery (FRK). Cooperation with a leading European cardiology institution is, firstly, a great honour for Medicalgorithmics, and secondly, a significant confirmation of the validity of the chosen direction and almost a guarantee of delivering a solution of the highest therapeutic quality – adds Dr Kris Siemionow.
– Our goal is to constantly strive to improve the quality of patient care, which is why we are involved in a project that has real potential to achieve this. The minimally invasive cardiac surgery robot that we can design together has the potential to significantly improve the way operations are performed. I believe that our joint robot will support cardiac surgeons in their daily work of saving patients’ lives – comments Dr Zbigniew Nawrat, MD, PhD, Creative Director of FRK.
The Prof. Zbigniew Religa Foundation for the Development of Cardiac Surgery in Zabrze is one of Poland’s leading research and scientific institutions, which since 1991 has been carrying forward its patron’s vision of introducing state-of-the-art life-saving techniques. The institution focuses on the development and implementation into clinical practice of cardiac assist systems (including Polish heart prostheses from the ReligaHeart family), medical robotics, and innovative solutions in the fields of bioengineering and biotechnology. Thanks to a unique combination of science and medicine, the Foundation not only supports progress in Polish cardiac surgery but also actively trains medical staff, setting international standards for modern heart failure therapy.
